Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a social media scheduling tool and a social media management platform?
A scheduling tool (like Buffer or Later) focuses on planning and publishing posts in advance. A full social media management platform (like Hootsuite or Sprout Social) adds team workflows, social listening, inbox management for comments and messages, and detailed analytics. Most small businesses only need a scheduling tool until they have a dedicated social media team.
Can I schedule Instagram posts automatically?
Yes. Buffer, Later, Hootsuite, and Metricool all support automatic publishing to Instagram (feed posts, carousels, and Reels). Instagram Stories can also be scheduled on most platforms. You need to connect your Instagram Business or Creator account — personal accounts cannot be scheduled to automatically.
Is there a free social media management tool worth using?
Yes. Buffer's free plan (3 channels, 10 scheduled posts each) and Metricool's free plan (1 profile per platform, basic analytics) are both genuinely useful for small businesses. They are not crippled trials — you can run a real social media presence on either for free, especially in the early stages.
How many social media accounts should a small business manage?
Focus on 2–3 platforms where your target audience is most active rather than spreading thinly across every network. For most B2C businesses, Instagram and Facebook are the priority. For B2B businesses, LinkedIn is essential. Adding TikTok makes sense if your audience is under 35 and you can produce short video content consistently. It is better to be active and consistent on two platforms than sporadic on five.
